As far back as 1850 B.C.E., the Ancient Egyptians used natural materials such as honey, sodium carbonate, and -you guessed it – dried crocodile dung as a contraceptive. The dung contains spermicidal properties similar to those used on condoms.
Some of the oldest condoms were found in the foundations of Dudley Castle in England. They were made of animal gut and dated back to 1640 (Parisot, 1985). They were probably used to reduce the risk of contracting sexually transmitted infections during the war between the forces of Oliver Cromwell and soldiers loyal to King Charles I.
Don’t want to use poo or animal guts to prevent unwanted pregnancies? Today’s market has tons of more convenient, hygienic options.
