Condomless AIDS protection?

In December of 2006 Science daily reported on this “molecular condom” which is a gel that becomes a solid formation when it comes in contact with semen so it can encapsulate the AIDS virus completely. It is a low cost alternative for women who are at high risk in countries like Africa.

5 to 10 years was the original time frame for trials to be completed but researchers hint it may be coming out sooner than that!

America’s Best Cities for Dating

Researchers at Sperling’s BestPlaces have ranked America’s top cities for dating. The study is based on the percentage of singles in the age range of 18-24, city population density, and the available dating venues per capita, which included concerts, coffee shops, bars, and the like.

Ranked number one on the list is Austin, Texas. It is a densely populated college town with the highest percentage of 18-24 year olds in the 80 cities ranked. Austin residents also have the highest expenditures on alcohol purchased away from home, no doubt at the many bars that dot the region. Austin also has some of the most well known music festivals in the world, Austin City Limits and South by Southwest almost double the population each year during their runs.

Ranking number two on the list is Colorado Springs, Colorado. A gathering place for techies and athletic types, Colorado Springs ranks in the 99th percentile for socializing at bars and dining out category.

Ranking number three on the list is San Diego, California. It scores high on the diversity index which means the likelihood of meeting someone of a different ethnicity is very high. When it comes to outdoor recreational activities you can take your pick, San Diego has a corner on the market.

So what are the three worst cities for dating? Kansas City, Missouri; Wichita, Kansas; and Minneapolis-St. Paul, Minnesota. If you’re looking for love here, you may be looking in the wrong place!

The Couple that Games Together, Stays Together.

Researchers at Brigham Young University have linked online gaming with marital dissatisfaction.

"Just 15 minutes, I've almost beat this level..."

349 couples that had at least one partner who played an online multiplayer role playing game, such as World of Warcraft,were surveyed about their relationship satisfaction.

The results showed that spouses who lose the attention of their significant other to gaming are not happy with their marriages. Of those surveyed 65 percent of spouses who don’t play video games said they fight with their partner who does about the habit, and 75 percent said their spouses habit has affected their marriage for the worse.

Heade researcher Lundberg says “There’s a group of people out there we weren’t able to tap into. Interested spouses would say things like ‘I would love for my husband to take this survey, but there’s no way he’ll get off the computer long enough to take it.’ … You don’t want to take a survey on marital satisfaction when you’re on the verge of divorce.”

Before you get too anxious there is a ray of hope. The survey found that couples who play together stay together. 74 percent of couples who played online multiplayer role playing games together found it had a positive impact on their marriage.

This confirms the idea that doing things together that both partners can enjoy helps to create bonding interactions that strengthen relationships.

Valentine’s Day in Japan

Valentine’s Day is celebrated a little differently in Japan. It is traditionally divided into two holidays, Valentine’s Day and White Day.

February 14th is still called Valentine’s Day but women are expected to give gifts to their sweethearts and their male aquaintances. Valentine’s is seen as a holiday when women can express their emotions through gifts, which are usually chocolates. Giri-choco are chocolates given to male friends, colleagues, bosses, and family. Giri in Japanese means ‘courtesy’ and these chocolates are handed out so everyone is included in the season’s festivities. Giri-choco are typically purchased where as the hon-mei or ‘chocolates of love’ for husbands,lovers, and boyfriends are typically handmade. It is not considered ‘true love’ if women buy chocolates for their sweethearts.

After all the chocolate giving of Valentine’s Day is over women then have White Day on March 14th to look forward to and on this day men are expected to return the gifts given to them on Valentine’s Day. The term sanbai gaeshi or ‘triple the return’, is often cited as the rule for giving gifts on this holiday. Often white chocolate, jewelry, lingerie, and marshmallows are given as gifts. White Day was first celebrated in 1978. It was started by the National Confectionery Industry Association as an “answer day” to Valentine’s Day on the grounds that men should pay back the women who gave them chocolate.

Seems like the United States isn’t the only country capitalizing on holidays!

Valentine’s in Ancient Rome

Valentine’s Day didn’t exist during the time of ancient Rome but men still wrote love poems.

However they weren’t tender caring notes filled with gooey romantic declarations of love or even flattery, the Romans wrote more about the pain and discomfort of love. Love was viewed as something that torments the lover more like a nightmare than a dream.

Barbara Gold, professor of the classics at Hamilton College in New York describes ancient love poems that call love a plague, and accuse love of making the writer ill. “You would never go out today and find a a valentine that says “You’re like a plague, you set my bone marrow on fire.” She says. Gold suspects the dark nature of the love poems relate to the sexual dynamics of the age. “It’s all about how they viewed women – women are a torment, women are a plague,” she said. “I think it’s because men were terrified of the power that women have, and they projected those feelings. It was the men who had more power in ancient Roman society. But any force that made them feel less in control and less powerful — such as a woman giving or withholding her love — could be very threatening.”

Romantic ideas of love were quite different in first century Rome, most marriages were arranged according to wealth and status and love was never taken into account, at least most people never expected to love their spouse.

Today’s culture allows for people to marry because of romance and mutual understanding because there is more of an equality in relationships and we aren’t under the strict social constraints of Roman culture.

So be glad you can choose who to have a relationship with!

Valentine’s Day or Divorce Day?

According to a new study Valentine’s Day has increasingly become a day of divorce in this country.

The data was compiled by Avvo.com, a site similar to yelp except that lawyers and MD’s are rated according to the service they provide. Avvo.com found that divorce filings increase by 40 percent and the number of questions regarding divorce increase 36 percent during Valentine’s Day, this compared to the previous 6 months!

Kelly Chang (divorce lawyer) attributed this increase to two groups of people: those who finally follow through on their New Year’s resolution to be single, and those who are waiting to see if Valentine’s Day will magically bring to the surface new behavior in their spouse.

Tips for Looking Great Naked

It can be nerve wracking getting naked in front of someone for the first time especially when we tend to focus on all the things we think are wrong with our bodies. Instead, think about the feature you like most and begin to appreciate your nakedness! Here are a few tips on how to look your best when getting naked in front of that special someone.

1) Exercise can not only help you get to a more comfortable size but it can also increase your flexibility, stamina, and confidence level. In addition to toning your muscles and skin , exercise will help your posture. Naked or not, good posture is attractive.

2) Take care of your skin, it covers your entire body! Of course there are the normal routines: exfoliating dead skin cells , shaving and waxing any unflattering hair, and moisturizing (men too!); but also think about taking a daily vitamin and fish oil supplement. Vitamins and minerals contain vital nutrients that contribute to healthy skin cells and hair cells, and fish oil works wonders on dry skin and membranes.

3) Style your hair, it’s the only thing you’ll be wearing in the buff!! Make sure to get a cut that suits the shape of your face and more importantly your personality. Keep it free of tangles and try not to use anything sticky in your hair so it will be touch-ably soft.

4) Proper Hygiene is a big one! Be careful to trim and shape jagged nails, you don’t want to scratch or poke anyone while you’re being intimate. Also beware of any strong smells that might be lingering on your hands, like garlic or onions and be sure to wash them off. Of course check your breath and teeth for stains and stuck foods.

5) Scent plays a major role in the attraction process so make sure you smell delicious. However DO NOT over power others with too much fragrance or use too many different smelling products (shampoo, deodorant, soap, and lotion) on your body. Choose a single scent to use for your products or unscented products with a small amount of perfume or cologne. Remember you want someone within two feet before they catch your scent so they’ll want to get closer for more.

6) Adjust the lighting if you can. No one looks good in bright fluorescent light. Try installing soft lamp lighting or sitting by the fire or candle light. This will greatly improve the setting and mood.

7) Adjust the room temperature before hand. Remember you want to be comfortable naked not shivering under a blanket or sweating profusely.

8) Finally just feel good about being naked! Practice if you have to, to get this one down. Cook or clean in the nude to get use to the feeling. Try going to a naked yoga class or sunning in the backyard. Get a massage or go to a nude bath house. Just remember no one’s body is perfect!

6 Holiday Date Ideas

The holidays can be a stressful time of year with so much pressure to get shopping done, to visit with family, or throw a party. These can easily take a toll on our relationships or prevent us from beginning new ones.

Ice Skating Couple

So here are a few unique date ideas you can do with your sugarplum this time of year:

1) Looking at lights: This is an easy and fun date idea. You can walk hand in hand or drive around town looking at the decorations on houses and storefronts. You can even make a game of scoring the festive displays and if you want to get really into the holiday spirit leave a small gift at the winning house!

2) Holiday Brunch or Tea Service: Around the holidays many tea houses and some fancy hotels offer an old fashioned tea service with mounds of ridiculously tasty pastries, sandwiches, and an array of teas. You often have to make reservations but its worth sitting around guzzling tea by a fire and eating decadent treats while being waited on hand and foot.

3) Bath House: This wouldn’t be a great choice for a first date but for couples who get tired of the cold cloudy months of winter and fried from the hectic pace of the holidays, bath houses are a great retreat to go relax in a hot tub with your sweetie and let the stress melt away.

4) Baking: Ok so you’re aren’t the best in the kitchen, but it is a great holiday date idea and it’s an activity that you can do together. Find a recipe, cookies are a really easy first foray into the baking scene. If you’re really unsure about baking from scratch you can always just grab pre-made dough and focus on decorating the cookies together with a ton of sprinkles! Besides who doesn’t like baked goods?

5) Outdoor activities: If you’re in an area that has a lot of snow you have ample choices here. There’s always, snowman building, snowball fights, sledding, snowshoeing, skiing, or ice skating. If you’re looking at a snow-less holiday season, don’t despair most cities have indoor ice skating and there is always hiking.

6) Decorating: There are lots of fun date ideas you can do with this one. Decorating the tree is by far the Christmas favorite but you can always decorate your pets and shame them by commemorating the event with a picture. You can also decorate wreaths, and cut out snowflakes (check out some great Star Wars snowflakes designs here)

We all know sex is pleasurable but there is more and more research pointing to the conclusion that it is also good for our health.

Health Benefits of Sex

Reduce Anxiety:

A study published in science journal PLoS ONE found that sexual activity has been shown to reduce anxiety in rodents and humans. The study also found that sex increased chemicals in the rats’ brains that protected them from the effects of stress hormones. According to another study, people who had more sexual intercourse had lower blood pressure when performing stressful tasks.

Increase happiness:

A study published by the National Bureau of Economic Research found that increasing the frequency of sexual intercourse from once a month to once a week was comparable mentally to getting a 50,000 raise.

Boost Immunity:

Regular sex can help boost our immune systems. Researchers speculate that moderate sexual activity (once or twice a week) exposes partners to other people’s “bugs” thereby boosting the levels of antibodies in the mucosal linings of the body.

Sooth Pain:

Research done at Rutgers University has found women have increased pain tolerance and decreased pain detection during vaginal stimulation and orgasm. One study found that around orgasm, women’s pain threshold increased 74.6 percent!

Reduce Prostate Cancer Risk:

A study published in the Journal of the AMA found that an active sex life was not associated with a higher risk of the disease. Men who ejaculated the most (21 times a month or more) were one third less likely to develop prostate cancer than those who ejaculated between four and seven times a month.
