Valentine’s in Ancient Rome

Valentine’s Day didn’t exist during the time of ancient Rome but men still wrote love poems.

However they weren’t tender caring notes filled with gooey romantic declarations of love or even flattery, the Romans wrote more about the pain and discomfort of love.  Love was viewed as something that torments the lover more like a nightmare than a dream.

Barbara Gold, professor of the classics at Hamilton College in New York describes ancient love poems that call love a plague, and accuse love of making the writer ill.  “You would never go out today and find a a valentine that says “You’re like a plague, you set my bone marrow on fire.” She says.  Gold suspects the dark nature of the love poems relate to the sexual dynamics of the age. “It’s all about how they viewed women – women are a torment, women are a plague,” she said. “I think it’s because men were terrified of the power that women have, and they projected those feelings. It was the men who had more power in ancient Roman society. But any force that made them feel less in control and less powerful — such as a woman giving or withholding her love — could be very threatening.”

Romantic ideas of love were quite different in first century Rome, most marriages were arranged according to wealth and status and love was never taken into account, at least most people never expected to love their spouse.

Today’s culture allows for people to marry because of romance and mutual understanding because there is more of an equality in relationships and we aren’t under the strict social constraints of Roman culture.

So be glad you can choose who to have a relationship with!

Women smell more attractive at different times of the month.

According to a study done by the Department of Anthropology at Charles University, Prague.  A woman’s scent is more attractive to men at certain times during her cycle.

Mysterious Pheromones

“We were interested whether armpit odor changes across menstrual cycle” said study author Jan Havlieek.  To test this theory a group of women wore absorbent pads under their arms during their three different monthly phases.  During this period the women did not wear perfumes, or deodorants, eat spicy foods, smoke, drink, or use hormonal medications as these would effect the scent molecules given off.

A woman’s 28 day cycle includes three different monthly phases and begins on the first day of menstruation, when blood and tissue are shed from the womb.  The next phase is the follicular phase when the egg grows and becomes ready to implant in the uterus.  The fertile phase begins when the egg is released from the ovaries and travels towards the uterus to be fertilized (or not).

The study found that men find women’s odors during the second phase, the follicular phase, the most attractive, and subtle.  The least attractive scents for men came from women during the menstruation phase.

The study also found that the attractiveness of a woman’s face changes during the different phases.  Men again found a women’s face more attractive during the follicular phase as opposed to the menstruation and fertile phases.

Tips for Looking Great Naked

It can be nerve wracking getting naked in front of someone for the first time especially when we tend to focus on all the things we think are wrong with our bodies.  Instead, think about the feature you like most and begin to appreciate your nakedness!  Here are a few tips on how to look your best when getting naked in front of that special someone.Feel good naked!

1) Exercise  can not only help you get to a more comfortable size but it can also increase your flexibility, stamina, and confidence level.  In addition to toning your muscles and skin , exercise will help your posture.  Naked or not, good posture is attractive.

2) Take care of your skin, it covers your entire body!  Of course there are the normal routines: exfoliating dead skin cells , shaving and waxing any unflattering hair, and moisturizing (men too!); but also think about taking a daily vitamin and fish oil supplement. Vitamins and minerals contain vital nutrients that contribute to healthy skin cells and hair cells, and fish oil works wonders on dry skin and membranes.

3) Style your hair, it’s the only thing you’ll be wearing in the buff!! Make sure to get a cut that suits the shape of your face and more importantly your personality.  Keep it free of tangles and try not to use anything sticky in your hair so it will be touch-ably soft.

4) Proper Hygiene is a big one! Be careful to trim and shape jagged nails, you don’t want to scratch or poke anyone while you’re being intimate.  Also beware of any strong smells that might be lingering on your hands, like garlic or onions and be sure to wash them off.  Of course check your breath and teeth for stains and stuck foods.

5) Scent plays a major role in the attraction process so make sure you smell delicious.  However DO NOT over power others with too much fragrance or use too many different smelling products (shampoo, deodorant, soap, and lotion) on your body.  Choose a single scent to use for your products or unscented products with a small amount of perfume or cologne.  Remember you want someone within two feet before they catch your scent so they’ll want to get closer for more.

6) Adjust the lighting if you can. No one looks good in bright fluorescent light. Try installing soft lamp lighting or sitting by the fire or candle light.  This will greatly improve the setting and mood.

7) Adjust the room temperature before hand.  Remember you want to be comfortable naked not shivering under a blanket or sweating profusely.

8) Finally just feel good about being naked!  Practice if you have to, to get this one down.  Cook or clean in the nude to get use to the feeling.  Try going to a naked yoga class or sunning in the backyard.  Get a massage or go to a nude bath house.  Just remember no one’s body is perfect!

Some added benefits from sex

We all know sex is pleasurable but there is more and more research pointing to the conclusion that it is also good for our health.

sex benefits

Health Benefits of Sex

Reduce Anxiety:

A study published in science journal PLoS ONE found that sexual activity has been shown to reduce anxiety in rodents and humans.  The study also found that sex increased chemicals in the rats’ brains that protected them from the effects of stress hormones.  According to another study, people who had more sexual intercourse had lower blood pressure when performing stressful tasks.

Increase happiness:

A study published by the National Bureau of Economic Research found that increasing the frequency of sexual intercourse from once a month to once a week was comparable mentally to getting a 50,000 raise.

Boost Immunity:

Regular sex can help boost our immune systems.  Researchers speculate that moderate sexual activity (once or twice a week) exposes partners to other people’s “bugs” thereby boosting the levels of antibodies in the mucosal linings of the body.

Sooth Pain:

Research done at Rutgers University has found women have increased pain tolerance and decreased pain detection during vaginal stimulation and orgasm.  One study found that around orgasm, women’s pain threshold increased 74.6 percent!

Reduce Prostate Cancer Risk:

A study published in the Journal of the AMA found that an active sex life was not associated with a higher risk of the disease.  Men who ejaculated the most (21 times a month or more) were one third less likely to develop prostate cancer than those who ejaculated between four and seven times a month.

Antioxidants are helpful for infertility in men.

A recent study in Fertility and Sterility journal finds that men who eat diets rich in antioxidants have better sperm motility, ejaculate volume, and sperm concentration than those who eat diets heavy in fat, meat and dairy. Men who aren’t getting enough antioxidants can have problems with infertility.

Antioxidant Rich Foods

Antioxidants are vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients which inhibit the effects of free radicals in the body. Free radicals are highly chemically reactive molecules, which start chain reactions in cells that led to damage and death.  Free radical damage in cells has been linked to many health problems like Alzheimer’s, arthritis, and cancer.

The three major antioxidant vitamins are beta-carotene, vitamin C, and vitamin E. Jaime Mendiola, the study’s head researcher, suggests that men who want to improve their sperm should load up on whole foods containing antioxidants.

The following antioxidant-packed foods are great additions to any diet: pomegranate, blueberries, spinach, asparagus, kale, lentils, broccoli, oranges, tomatoes, watermelon, grapefruit, and carrots

Red wine contains antioxidants, too — just another reason to open a bottle on a romantic evening.

Interesting Sex Statistics

Some well known and little addressed sex topics may have some surprising information for you.

What is the average penis size?

More than half of sexually active men and women will have a genital HPV infection at some point in their lives. The HPV virus can cause genital warts and in severe cases cancer. In 90 percent of infections, the body’s immune system will cure the disease in two years.

According to a survey of adults between 20 to 59, women have an average of four sex partners during their lifetime; men have an average of seven.

Two-thirds of college students have been in a “friends with benefits” relationship. More than half of those who had sex with a friend said they had engaged in all forms of sex.

While 75 percent of men always reach orgasm during sex, only 29 percent of women reach orgasm during intercourse. Many women are unable to climax through vaginal intercourse, instead needing clitoral stimulation.

Despite the rumors, the average erect penis is five to seven inches long, and four to six inches in circumference.

Sex ‘sleep walking’ study

Sexsomnia, as it’s been dubbed, is a sleeping disorder characterized by people who initiate sex with a partner and reach orgasm during sleep.  These people usually have no memory of the incident and only find out later from partners that the event even occurred.

Sexomnia

Sex while asleep.

Of the eight percent of patients studied at sleep clinics, who complain of Sexomnia, it is almost three times more prevalent in men.

Unfortunately, for sexomniacs, they tend to suffer from the same symptoms of other sleep disorders, which include depression, fatigue, and insomnia.

The high incidence of the Sexomnia is because it is being studied predominately at sleep clinics where is it reported.  Researches expect it to be much less prevalent in the general population.  For now the mechanisms behind the odd form of ‘sleep walking’ will continue to be studied at the University Health Network in Toronto.

Study Shows Love is More Powerful Than Sex!

Brain distingushes between love and sexNew study by State University of New York-Stony Brook suggests the brain distinguishes the pursuit of love and sex as two separate emotions.

Brain scans taken of a small group of men and women who were to love showed that the areas of the brain associate with romance and the areas associated with sexual arousal overlap moderately.

“To our surprise, the activation regions associated with intense romantic love were mostly on the right side of the brain, while the activation regions associated with facial attractiveness were mostly on the left,” said Lucy Brown of the Albert Einstein College of Medicine.

The study also shows that the neural activity in the brain becomes more complex over the length of a romantic relationship, and that 40% of people rejected from a relationship tend towards depression.

So being in love is good for your health! See the full article here.
